Status: Almost there :D
OK, so on principle I don't like Emerson, but I thought the sentiment fit, so I'm posting this thing here. (That was eloquent.)
Some quotes for you:
- Although prepared for martyrdom, I preferred that it be postponed.
Winston Churchill
- As human beings, our greatness lies not so much in being able to remake the world - that is the myth of the atomic age - as in being able to remake ourselves.
Mohandas Gandhi
-"Our Deepest Fear"
By: Marianne Williamson
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
--> I love this quote!
Have a good one.

I really like that quote, as well. thank you for sharing it with me. I agree with Gandhi. I think that our ability to know ourselves is our most important gift, at least that's what i got out of it. Williamson: i agree completely with the fact that our extremes for both good and evil is, and should be, our fear in ourselves. And this glory, neshama, that we hold within us, it is our responsibility to use it.
Yes, Sarahle, but it's deeper than that. Gandhi is saying that knowing oneself is the first step, but the true power is the ability to change oneself. This is a Jewish idea as well. Humans can change characteristics, good or evil characteristics (middot) alike.
Similarly, I understood Williamson to be saying that each individual has greatness within them, a greatness or potential so big and incredible that it scares the beholder. It is the act of hiding from this greatness which creates the evil of which you speak, and fear is what holds us back. But it serves no purpose to withhold or hide from oneself. The question here is not a choice between good or evil as much as it's a choice between achieving ones potential or languishing in anonymity. Do you understand better now?
yes, thank you. i agree with your statements above and am greatful that you expounded on the matter to better clarify it for me.
It was my pleasure... :D
